iPod Restore – Bring Your iPod Back From the Dead

If your iPod is having some issues, it might be a good thing to do a “restore” on it.

Restoring your iPod will return it back to its factory settings so that everything can be as good as new. If you think that your iPod is totally dead, you may want to consider doing an iPod restore instead.

Before you attempt to do this, you should know that you will lose your music and other data. You iPod will truly be set to the condition it was in when it was brand new. That is why it is a good idea to always back up your data on your computer whenever possible.

The first thing you’ll need to do to start the restore is to download the latest version if iTunes. If you don’t have the latest version then you may have difficulty with the directions. It is a free download; so don’t worry about any costs creeping up on you.

Then, hook your iPod up to your computer using a USB cable (or Firewire if yours uses that instead). When you’re all hooked up, your iPod should show up on the screen.

You’re going to want to locate the “source panel” in the iTunes program. When you do that you will be able to choose the “restore” function.

There are several different types of iPod restore for you to choose from. You can either opt to keep the same software or upgrade to a new version. You’ll usually want to get the latest edition of the software so that you’re staying up to date with everything.

When the software if finished downloading, you will get model specific restore directions. After all, what works for an iPod touch will probably not work for an old iPod Nano since they are very different in function and personality. You will either have to disconnect your iPod and connect it to power or leave it connected to the computer.

You’ll have to leave your iPod in whatever condition the previous step asked while the progress bar is being updated. When that if is finished, your iTunes setup will recognize your iPod as a new component. You will have to rename your iPod and everything. It is kind of like a fresh start!

Having to do an iPod restore can be a scary thing for many people. This is especially true if you expect your electronics to just work.

Sadly, things do go wrong and you may have to go through these steps. Even so, it is a very simple process once you know the right way to do it. Your iPod will be running perfectly again in no time.

Hey, I’d just like to say that even when your iPod is all screwed up you can back all the music up onto your computer by going into your ipod -> Music -> F0,F1,F2,F3,F4,F5 (contains all the music), back all those folders up to another folder and restore, then go back to those folders and stick them in
